Eleanor Ruth Evertson, 92, Topeka, passed away June 3, 2013. She was born March 29, 1921, in Topeka, the daughter of Floyd R. and Jessie A. Karr Osborn. Eleanor attended Topeka schools and graduated from Topeka High in 1939. She attended Kansas State University and graduated from Washburn University. Eleanor taught for 25 years for District 501, in Topeka, retiring from McClure Elementary School. She spent her life in Topeka.
Eleanor was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, The Golden Beacon Sunday School Class, taught in the Children's Department, and served on many committees in the church. She also served on the board for "Children's Hour" of Topeka, a United Way Agency, and was a weekly volunteer storyteller for the three Children's Hour Pre-Schools after she retired.
Eleanor volunteered at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and served six years on The Friend's Board. She was a member of Chapter DN of the PEO Sisterhood, The American Association of University Women, Topeka Branch, and belonged to several individual interest groups within the Branch, The Topeka and Kansas State Association of Retired Teachers. Eleanor was a former member of Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's sorority and was a member of Group XI, an ecumenical group of business and professional women. She served on the Board of the Topeka Language Bank for many years.
Eleanor was married to Harry L. Kirk, Jr. on July 3, 1942. They were divorced. She later married Merlin A. Evertson on August 11, 1951. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1992.
Survivors include three sons, Stephen Evertson, Robert Evertson, and Bradley Evertson; daughter, Leigh Anne Kirk; grandchildren, Rosella McCallister and Melissa Evertson; and great-grandchildren, Stephen Byttner and Cameron McCallister.
Eleanor was cremated. Memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4000 SW Drury Lane, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Lowman United Methodist Church. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
