Governor of Washington. He was a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle. He served as Governor of Washington state from 1933 to 1941, and as Mayor of Cheney, Washington from 1928 to 1932. Following his second term in office he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Washington State House of Representatives, representing the 5th Legislative District. In 1950 he accepted a position on the Cheney City Council before retiring from public office in 1952. His greatest political achievement during his term as governor was directed towards the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River during the great depression years. On December 6, 1935 he officially poured the first bucket of cement for the federal works project. In 1970 the football stadium located on the campus of Washington State University was renamed and dedicated in his honor.
