SPRINGFIELD - Thomas Gerald Fitzsimmons, 77, of Springfield died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

He was born May 24, 1928, in Lincoln, the son of Joseph and Marie Fahey Fitzsimmons. He married Celia “Ceci” Jones in 1951.

Mr. Fitzsimmons graduated from St. Bede Academy in Peru and Lincoln College. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a military police sergeant in the Korean War. He retired as executive director of the Illinois Municipal League and was assistant purchasing agent for Lehn & Fink in Lincoln. He was an administrative assistant to Michael J. Howlett, auditor of public accounts, assistant director of the Illinois office in Washington, D.C., and director of the statewide billion-dollar bond issue on water pollution. He served as staff coordinator for the Illinois Cities and Villages Municipal Problems Commission and chairman of the Midwest Council of State Municipal League Directors. He was a basketball coach at St. Patrick’s School in Lincoln and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Illinois Society of Association Executives, Northwestern University Commission on Public Administration and Kellogg School of Learning, Island Bay Yacht Club and, for 54 years, American Legion Post 263 in Lincoln. He was a former member of the National League of Cities Board of Directors.

Survivors: wife, Celia; three daughters, Kathleen (husband, Carl) Mauldin of Santa Rosa, Calif., Cindy (husband, Steve) Baker of Auburn and Charlotte Collins (companion, Mark Hindson) of Springfield; son, Kelly (wife, Ruth) Fitzsimmons of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Monsignor Richard Fitzsimmons of Batavia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Burial: Old Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
