Mrs. Nettie Hielkema, age 80, of Orange City, passed away Sunday, March 6 at the Heritage House Nursing Home.
Nettie was born Aug. 12, 1907 at Orange City, the daughter of Albert Houtsma and Anna Wibben Houtsma. As a child she moved with her parents to Ocheyedan.
On Aug. 20, 1925, she married Henry Hielkema at Ocheyedan. They made their home there until 1930 when they moved to the Pease, Minnesota area where they farmed in four different locations.
In 1944 they moved to Texas and in 1950 they returned to Orange City. Mr. Hielkema passed away Sept. 25, 1969 at Orange City.
In August of 1983, Mrs. Hielkema became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull and in March of 1987 she transferred to the Heritage House.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City.
For many years she was an Avon representative in the Orange City area. She was instrumental in bringing low-rent housing to Orange City, specifically Orange Colony.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Edward (Sophie) Winters of Pease; three sons, Arthur of Orange City, Harvey of Baldwin, Wis., and Allan of Byron Center, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Jasper of Orange City, Mrs. Clara Van Otterloo of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs, Tena Dolieslager of Orange City and Mrs. Marie McGowan of Corpus Christi, Tex,
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and six brothers and sisters, Peter Houtsma, Tillie Vander Plaats, Gertrude Houtsma, Gerrit Houtsma, Cornie Houtsma and Anna Schubert.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 9 at the First Reformed Church with the Rev. Dr. Cecil Martens and the Rev. Frank Snuttjer officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City,
