Hilda Root was born to John and Christina Trabant. She was the youngest of 14 children.

In 1886 a tornado killed her mother and a sister and injured her father. She was raised by a minister and his family as their own in Colorado.

She married Mark Root and together they had a daughter, who died in infancy. Hilda Rose was able to celebrate her 100th birthday with friends and family before she died.
