A.M. Putney Dies At Malden Home

Valley Pioneer Taken at 81; Was Retired Coal Official

Alexander Mosley Putney, 81, retired Campbell’s Creek Coal company official, died yesterday at noon at his home at Malden.

Mr. Putney, from whom the town was named, was born on January 20, 1852 at Malden, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ellis Putney jr. He received his education in the Kanawha County schools. His father was born in Malden district on March 18, 1818.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alberta Rebecca Putney; two children, Mrs. John T. Morgan of Charleston and Moseley Littlepage Putney of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Aunette Thayer and Mrs. I. J. Stanley, both of Charleston, and three grandchildren.

Mr. Putney’s body was removed to Barlow’s funeral home pending funeral arrangements. Services are to be held tomorrow.

Entered Business in 1868

In 1868, Mr. Putney first entered business with Gen. Lewis Ruffner in the manufacture of salt at Sinkersville in the pioneer salt furnace, near Malden on the Kanawha river. During 1871 and 1872, he was engaged in the coal business with R. C. W. Lovell.

On May 1, 1873, Mr. Putney became connected with the Campbell’s Creek Coal company, having charge of the company’s office in Cincinnati. He was then given the management of the concern’s stores at Coal Fork, Dana and Putney. The late S. F. Dana, who was then president of the Campbell’s Creek company, named the town of Putney for the deceased.

In 1920 Mr. Putney retired from his duties as an official of the coal company after 47 years of service.
