Art Simpkins, age 80, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

Born in Riverside, CA, on October 28, 1932, he was the son of Merl and Mereon Simpkins.

Art grew up in CA, had a large paper route, was active in YMCA programs, became an Eagle Scout, and was the chief of the local Scout order of the arrow. He enjoyed hiking and camping in the local mountains.

After graduating from high school, he joined the US Air Force and became a multi-engine pilot where he launched his dream of traveling the world.

He left the Air Force, married Sandra Cox and lived in Santa Barbara, CA, before moving his wife and three children to Lee's Summit. Here he became a knowledge-driven teacher, certified in the Montessori methods of instruction.

He rejoined the Air Force Reserve and resumed his travels which included many towns and villages on every continent, each time returning with materials that he would eventually use when teaching geography and science to children. He retired from the Air Force with many honors and awards.

Art was a much loved husband, dad, uncle, brother, son, grandpa ('papa'), and friend. Over his life time he mastered several career fields and enjoyed sharing his expertise and experiences with children.

Art is survived by his wife, Mamie and daughter Elizabeth of Lee's Summit; his son Philip, daughter-in-law Ali, and two granddaughters, Christina and Angela in San Antonio, TX; two brothers, Richard in Virginia and Herbert in California. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Sandra; son, David, and daughter, Linda.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 08, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Unity Village Chapel. Memorials or donations may be made to Unity Village Fillmore Chapel or the American Cancer Society.
