In 1848, Lavinia married William Howard, a medical doctor, and went to live with him in Waverly, Ohio. Their son, William Burton Howard, was born January 20, 1849. Dr. Howard died in October, 1849. While treating patients during an epidemic "he gave himself so completely to attending the sick and became so exhausted that he contracted the disease and died."
On July 10, 1850, Lavinia married Publius V. Jones. They moved to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1865. They had seven sons, Marcus Eugene, Charles Hughs, Edward Publius, Lucien Corydon, Lynds, Burton Howard, and Arthur Julius and one daughter, Carrie Louise (Jones) Morse.
