Soldier, Engineer and Chemist died at his home 143 E North Ave. As a child , his family moved to Texas.
At the outbreak of the war Col McCarty join the Confederate army being appointed commander of the First Texas Legion.
While serving in that capacity, he was shot through the wrist. According to reports, the first shot fired at Gettysburg was fired by 1st Lt Marcellus E. Jones of Co. E, 8th Illinois Cavalry aimed at Col McCarty. The shot took place 7:30 am, July 1st, 1863 as Col McCarty was leading his column across the Cashtown creek bridge.
After the war, Col McCarty went to Mexico and spent time during the reign of Emperor Maxmillian. Later he went to Paris and studied chemistry and engineering.From Paris, he went to Russia and spent 11 years in the sevice of Czar Alexander II as a Colonel of Engineers in the Russian Army. In 1881/1882 he returned the the US and spent time in Western Maryland.Between that time and the first World War, he spent time devoted to studies of Latin America, travelling there many times. During WW1, he was director of Canada Nitro Products Company, living there for 5 years.All the while he referred to Baltimore as his home. He spoke fluent Russian, German and French. Records of Sons of the Revolution indicate he was relatives with George Washington and also connected with the family of Robert E. Lee. One of his fforebears was also George Mason of Bill of Rights fame.His wife was Ada F, McCarty
