Obituary: Mrs. Jo Ann Whitman, 81, of Beckley, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Braley Care Home, Hurricane. She was born February 19, 1932, in Princeton, to Glen and Willie Murphy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jimmy Murphy; and her husband, Spike Whitman.

Jo Ann is survived by her daughters, Beth and Pam Whitman and one grandson, Joshua Whitman. She is also survived by one sister, Sarah and husband, Carl Shaffer; and three brothers, Howard Murphy, Mike and wife, Aretta Murphy and Mason and wife, Malita.

Jo Ann was retired from Raleigh County Schools. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beckley.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Beckley.

Jo Ann selflessly donated her body to the WVU Human Gift Registry to support medical education and research.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Poca, is serving the Whitman family.
