Gam Chew was born in the village of Ai Gong, China. During the Japanese invasion and occupation of China during World War II, she and her family hid in mountain caves to avoid invaders. She came to the United States in 1950. She was one of many unsung Chinese immigrant women who worked in Seattle garment factories in the 1970s and 1980s. She is remembered as a great storyteller; she constantly sang traditional poems, called muk yu, or wooden fish songs. Mrs. Chew is survived by three sons and one daughter and by 11 grandchildren.
