Awarded the Silver Star under General Orders No. 90 (1945), for conspicuous gallantry in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 71st Infantry Division during World War II. Died of gunshot wounds during battle in Germany on 25 March 1945.

The marker shown here was ordered by Wayne's brother, Roger, of Cedar Rapids, with delivery made to Harry Lee Bailey, their cousin, of Oakville.
