Douglas Farmer Killed When Struck By Plank
Mired Tractor Whirls Board Against Man's Chest.
TUSCOLA -- Fred Barger, 52, well known Douglas county farmer, was fatally injured Monday when hit in the chest by a seven-foot plank shot from beneath the spinning wheels of a tractor mired on his farm five and a half miles northwest of Tuscola.
Barger was standing near the mired tractor after placing some planks and logs under the wheels in an attempt to provide traction when the driver, Lee Rahm, of Tuscola, threw the machine into reverse, causing the plant to fly from beneath the wheels.
The farmer was knocked to his knees by the blow but said he was not seriously hurt and started to walk toward the house a quarter of a mile away, witnesses said at an inquest conducted by Dr. Myron Boylson, Douglas county coroner. Half way home, Barger collapsed and died a half hour later. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m.
Abdominal organs were ruptured by the blow, the coroner's jury decided. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
Besides his wife, Nellie, Barger leaves a daughter, Iola, 14, his mother, Mrs. Alice Barger of Champaign and three brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Arcola Free Methodist church. Burial will be in Arcola cemetery.
