PICKENS – Services for E. M. “Zip” Hanna, 84, will be held at 1 p.m. today, January 20, 2001 at the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holmes Bible College, 115 Briggs Ave., Greenville, SC.
Mr. Hanna died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the VA Nursing Home in Asheville. Born in Chester, December 1, 1916, he was the son of the late John Jackson and Rebecca Robinson Hanna. Educated in the Chester public schools, he graduated from Gaffney High School and attended the University of South Carolina, where he played guard for the Gamecocks. He also played professional football for the Washington Redskins.
Mr. Hanna was appointed Chief of Police in Rock Hill and later in Aiken. He served as a paid consultant to the director of the Extension Division, USC – a division of Law Enforcement Training. He served as instructor in Municipal Police Administration and Supervisory Methods for USC for seven years. He was visiting lecturer at the University of Georgia and Provost Marshall General School, Fort Gordon, Ga.
Prior to entering law enforcement, he was a high school teacher and football coach at Olympia High School in Columbia, an Athletic Director and Secretary of the YMCA in Columbia and Huntsville, Ala. After retiring from law enforcement, he was a real estate broker and owner of E. M. Hanna Company in Greenville.
Mr. Hanna served in the Navy during World War II. He was an instructor for ICMA Institute of Training, past president of the North and South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association and past president of the S. C. Chapter of the FBI National Academy Association.
Mr. Hanna touched many lives through his years of being a faithful public servant. He lived a rich, full life and was greatly loved by all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Evelyn A’Della White, Huntsville, Ala.; sons Carey M. Hanna, Aiken, Zipp Hanna, Traveler’s Rest; daughters Sheila Holladay, Central, Diane Owen, Pickens; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Janell Helms, Chester.
