John Alexander Drake was born on 16.4.1834 at Bedminster, Somerset, England and was baptised on 27.9.1836 at Bristol. His father was John Drake b 1828 in Cheriton Fitzpaine. His mother was Mary Ann Studdy born in 1811. John's sister was Elizabeth Studdy Drake b 1829.

John Alexander Drake was a Cornet in the 7th Dragoon Guards before entering the church. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall on 26.5.1853, received his B.A. in 1858, and his M.A. in 1862. On 15.1.1865 he was posted as the Rev. John Alexander Drake to St.John the Baptist, Smallhythe. In October 1865, he was appointed to the rectory of Brockley, Bury St.Edmunds, Suffolk where he stayed for many years with St.Andrew Church.

On 1.12.1859 he married Louisa Creery Furley at St.Mary Magdalene, Hastings, Sussex, England. They had 13 children. His wife died in 1890 and in 1892, he married again to Annie Marie Meredith. They had a daughter, Florence Marjorie, who died aged 2 months.

The Rev. John died on 20.9.1897 at Lowestoft, Suffolk and was buried on 22.9.1897 in the Municipal Cemetery of Kirkley, Suffolk, England - Grave No. 5701. Annie Marie Drake died in 1899.
