Thomas Leon Deaton CHARLOTTE - Tom died peacefully at home holding his wife's hand on Saturday, June 8, 2013, the same day as his mother 17 years earlier. He was born on July 3, 1941, to George Duke Deaton and Grace Brown Deaton. After graduating from Harrisburg High School he enlisted in the Air Force in 1960. When he was discharged he returned to Charlotte and was employed by Overnight Transportation Co., where he retired after 34 years. Tom was a hard worker and he and his wife enjoyed doing everything together, especially the sawmill they bought and spending time at their property in Oakboro. He was honest, kind and a true gentleman who loved his family very much. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Mae Smoot, and a niece, Donna Deaton McElwaine. Tom is survived by his wife Mary, who loved him so much; brothers, Crawford Deaton of Charlotte and Carl Deaton of Davidson; daughters, Denise Gerber (Kevin) of Virginia Beach, VA, Cheryl Beach of Cornelius, Leslie Rogers (Brett) of Ft. Mill, SC, Pam O'Neill (Sean) of Springfield, GA, and Claire Lundquist (Don) of Ft. Mill, SC; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and one nephew. The family would like to thank the staff of Southern Oncology, all the wonderful and loving people with Hospice of Lake Norman, the staff at Visiting Angels, all our dear neighbors and our special friends, Bob and Nancy Wolff. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Lake Norman, 705 Griffith St., Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036 or Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, 1600 N. Mallard Creek Church Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 Tuesday, June 11 at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ernest Gardner officiating.
