James Wehrle Moran, 86, of Charleston, passed away at St. Francis Hospital on June 7, 2013. He was born August 1, 1926, to James Moran and Josephine Wehrle Moran of Giles, W.Va.
Jim attended East Bank High School and enlisted in the Navy in February 1944. He was a proud veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served on the USS LST 652 and the USS BB64 Wisconsin. He was a member of the American Legion and life member of VFW Post 297.
Jim was the owner/operator of Moran's Exxon at Giles, W.Va., for many decades. He also owned another service station in Chesapeake, W.Va., for several years before selling it. After suffering a heart attack at age 50, Jim retired and closed the business in the early 70's. He was an avid WVU fan and loved watching all sports. He was also a classic car enthusiast having owned several in his life, with a particular interest in Lincoln Continentals and 1950's Thunderbirds. He was a faithful and lifelong Catholic and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Lois O. Moran, who passed away a week prior to his passing on May 31, 2013. They were married for 60 years on April 17. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Post.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Daniel Rogers; granddaughter, Amanda "Mandy Jo" Rogers. She was the light of his life. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends that he loved dearly.
You could find him most mornings at McDonalds on Patrick Street chatting with a regular group of friends. He had not been able to attend the past few months, but the gang sent cards of encouragement and visited, which lifted his spirits. The family would like to thank Dr. Reginald McClung, Blessing Eya and the staff at Dream Home in Cross Lanes for all the tender care shown to Jim. A very special thank you goes to William "Bill" Miller who was a steadfast friend and caregiver, Jason Keeney whom he thought of as a son and Carl and Joann who visited, encouraged and were great friends to both Lois and Jim. Any extra time we had with Jim is thanks to these people and their devotion to Jim.
Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday June 11, at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie officiating.
Entombment with military rites, will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Visitation with family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 10, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston with a Christian prayer service being held at 7:30 p.m.
