Military Leader and Diplomat. A 25 yr. old resident of Keokuk, Lee Co., Ia.he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. of Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Commissioned a 1st. Lt. on July 15, 1861 at Camp Warren, Burlington, Ia. he was assigned as Quartermaster for the 5th Iowa Regt. Detailed as Adjutant for the Regt. on Jan. 27, 1862. Promoted Lt. Col. for the 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment on Nov. 3, 1862 and Bvt. Col. & Bvt. Brigadier General, U.S.V. on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious conduct at Mobile, Ala. He served as Provost Marshal General, Dept. of Arkansas and Acting A.I.G. on staff of Brig. Gen. William P. Benton. After the war he served as U.S. Internal Revenue collector and diplomat holding the post of U.S. Consul at Calcutta, India from 1896 to 1906. He died at St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada on Jan. 9, 1907 and was buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
