South Dakota Governor. He entered politics in 1892 as a member of the Peoples' Party in Vermillion, South Dakota; and was elected the third Governor of South Dakota in 1896 as a Republican. He was reelected as a Fusion Party candidate in 1898. He declined to run for reelection in 1900, preferring to return to his ranching business in Vermillion. He attempted a comeback in 1908, running as a Democrat for Governor, but was defeated.
