South Dakota Governor. He was a farmer, attended the University of South Dakota, (1886-90), studied engineering at Cornell University in 1892 and became a land surveyor. He served as Alloting Agent for three Indian Reservations, (1904-11). He also was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives, (1893-1919) and Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota, (1921-25). In 1925, he was elected as a Republican the 11th Governor of South Dakota, serving until 1927. During his administration, the Standard Cooperative Law was enacted, enabling marketing associations, the State Department of Agriculture was established and legislative action provided for an Executive Budget. After leaving office, he retired to his farm until his death at age 68.
