Rev. Alonzo M. Gatewood, 71 of Winchester, husband of Laura Bates Gatewood, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was born in Powell County on Dec. 9, 1937 to the late Cecil and Minnie Lucas Gatewood. He was a Supervisor of Pre-Trial with the State of Kentucky, an employee of Rockwell Int. for 10 years, a former employee of Scobee Funeral Home, and served as Pastor of the Pine Grove CME Church in Powell County. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Harold G. Epperson Marine Corps League Detachment 1113, the Elks Lodge, the Masonic Lodge, and the Powell County Ministerial Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Ruth Ann Gatewood of Winchester, Sonya Gatewood Thomas (Cecil) of Lexington, Elizabeth Carol Gatewood of Louisiana, and Donna Gatewood of Lexington; five stepsons, Roy F. Turner (Valorie) of Lexington, Ronald W. Turner of Atlanta, GA, Kenneth Lee Turner (Jennifer) of Richmond, KY, Jackie Turner of Atlanta, GA, and Bret Turner of Winchester; three brothers, John Gatewood (Nannie) of Atlanta, GA, Wallace Gatewood (Sharon) of MD, and Clifton Gatewood of CA; a sister, Pinnie Mae Hampton (Rudolphas) of Springfield, OH; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Monday, August 31, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, 37 N. Highland Street by Rev. Dr. K. Solomon Williams and Bishop Edward Lynn Brown. Burial will be in the Madison County Memorial Gardens under the direction of Scobee Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the First Baptist Church, 37 N. Highland St.
