Alfred O. Boemer of Austin, age 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Al was born December 19, 1927 in Berclair, TX and went to his heavenly home on Friday, June 8, 2012. He graduated from A.C. Jones High School in Beeville, TX and then enlisted in the US Navy for a two year tour of duty toward the end of WWII. After leaving the Navy, Al attended and graduated from Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos.

He then began teaching at the San Marcos BaptistAcademy. It was during this time that he met and then married the love of his life, his wife Lu, in August,1958. That same year Al began his 33 year teaching career with AISD at Wm. B. Travis High School. He taught biology and physiology during his years at Travis. He also served as Asst. Director of the Young Scholars program at the University of Texas for 27 summer terms. He retired from AISD in 1991 and enjoyed many happy retirement years with Lu traveling the world, taking care of his farm, and working in his yard and garden at home. One of his greatest joys was to tend to his garden. As a lover of all plants and flowers and a true green thumb, he always enjoyed visiting with the neighbors passing by on their daily walks and sharing his garden produce. Al and Lu were early members of Redeemer Lutheran Church and he served the Lord in a variety of roles through the years. Many of their longest and most dearly loved friends are members of Redeemer.

Al is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 54 years, Lu, son Steven Boemer of Austin, daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law, Gary Issleib of Round Rock, grandson Clayton Issleib of Oklahoma City, and granddaughter Ashton Issleib of College Station. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elizabeth Boemer, and his sister Lorene Gronhovd.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and thanks for the excellent care and compassion by the doctors and staff of Texas Oncology and Hospice Austin the past two years.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening, on Sunday, the 10th of June 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.

A graveside service will be conducted at half past ten o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 11th of June 2012, at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery, Pflugerville, Texas.

A memorial service will be conducted at half past one o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 11th of June, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Anderson Lane, Austin, Texas under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
