John "Byron" O'Connor, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, September 9, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Reverend Thomas E. Geelan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 P.M. today, with the family present from 5 to 8 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. O'Connor was born Jun 15, 1907, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the son of Jerry A. and Sarah Jane (Glass) O'Connor. He moved to Sioux City with his family in 1912. He graduated from Trinity High School.
He married Elizabeth A. Huls on December 11, 1930, on Onawa, Iowa. She died February 5, 1961, in Sioux City. He was employed as a firefighter with the Sioux City Fire Department Local 7 from February 1939, until retiring in March 1964. He also became a part-time piano tuner technician in the 1940s. In the 1970s, he owned and operated O'Connor's Piano Service, retiring in the 1980s.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Blessed Sacrament Men's Club, the Local 212 of the City Employees Union, where he was a past treasurer, the Local 7 of the Sioux City Professional Fire Fighters Association, where he was a past president. He was a member of the Sioux City Retired Fire Fighters and a retired member of the National Piano Tuners Guild. He was a member of the Siouxland Senior Center, the Senior Center's Siouxland Amateur Club and the Sioux City Noon Lion's Club. He organized many functions and entertained. During World War II, he was chairman of the Scrap Iron Drive.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Stella and Keith Klingler of Iowa City, Iowa; a son and his wife, Patrick J. and Judy of Sioux City; a sister Stell Burke of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren, Cindy Maher, Chell Anne Amsler, Tara Shellhammer, Kimberly Truxaw, and Jerry O'Connor; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawton.
Pallbearers will be members of the Sioux City Fire Department Local 7.
