After a divorce, Ethel moved from Indiana to Memphis TN with her two young sons. She was considerably older than Michael Abt, and didn't at first take his attentions seriously. He became a devoted stepfather to her boys, as well as their instructor at Tech High. A philanthropist had paid for four years at Cleveland Art Institute for Michael, and his custom was to do the same for some of his students, which is what he did for her son Burton. When he returned to Memphis, Burton worked with Michael for many years on the Cotton Carnival parade, and eventually the Spirit of Christmas parade. Burton taught for thirty years at the Memphis Academy of Art (now the College of Art). Please read the bios for Michael and Burton.
