Gilbert Avery was born in Ulster County, New York, February 25, 1842. At the age of 23 he was married to Miss Jennie Vaughn. To this union two children were born -
Nellie, who died after reaching the years of womanhood, and Mrs. Anna Doane, now living in Lander. After five years his wife died and he was later married to Miss Jeannette Wilson. To this union were born ten children - Oren and Bert Avery, Mrs. T.O. Doores, Mrs. Charles Scoville and Miss Georgia Avery of Meeteetse and vicinity;
Mrs. Alice Leseberg and Floyd Avery of Lander; Frank Avery and Mrs. Jennie McCoy of Idaho.
Mr. Avery came to Wyoming about thirty years ago and first settled at Lander. He came to Meeteetse fourteen years ago, and took up a homestead in what is known as the Poverty Flat country, up the Greybull, where he has since made his home. Besides his immediate family, this good old gentleman leaves a host of friends to mourn his loss. His was the life of a pioneer ranchman, and his days of hardship and
patient toil will find their reward in that heavenly kingdom.
