Gale Leroy Lyautey, CPO U.S. Navy Retired, 74, of Orlando, passed away last Monday (March 26, 2012) at Vitas Innovative Hospice Care Home, surrounded by his family after a courageous two-year battle with methothelioma lung cancer.

Born July 13, 1937 in Kane, Pa., he was a son of Edward and Elverna Donaldson Lyautey. The family moved to Shinglehouse, Pa., where he attended school. As a young man, he was a member of the Shinglehouse Fire Department Band.

In February 1955 he joined the Navy, attending basic training aboard Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. After basic training, he began his 20-year career aboard Naval Atlantic Fleet Command Norfolk, Va. as an engine man.

Gale trained to repair engines on cruisers, destroyers, large amphibious ships, submarines and supply ships.

He served in Vietnam from 1960 to 1974, much of it as one of the first Navy Seals. His unit was involved in combat action in the Tet Offensive in 1968. He was wounded and awarded both the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart.

After his service to his country, he worked for Clark Brothers in Olean and Tubordine in Wellsville using the skills he learned working on the Navy engines. In 1980 he went to work for AT&T in Orlando, Fla., which would later become Lucent Technologies, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of the Bolivar American Legion in Bolivar, N.Y.

Gale is survived by his wife, Patricia Tokar Lyautey; three daughters, Julie Anne (Paul Eddy) Lyautey, of Weston's Mills, N.Y., Gail Lyautey and Wendy (Billy McAnally) Lyautey, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Montgomery (Butch) Lyautey and Paul (Lisa Pruett) Lyautey, both of Orlando Fla.; and a step-son, Steven (Carrie) Tokar, of Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, Edward (Ruby) Lyautey, of Tennessee, Lawrence Lyautey, of Rochester, N.Y., and Frank (Irmgard Von Klist) Lyautey, of Shinglehouse Pa.; two sisters, O'Della (William) Wood, of Rochester, N.Y., and Wanda McFeaters, of Grove City, Pa.; three grandsons; three granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Elverna Lyautey; his former wife, Sharon Jordan Lyautey; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Lyautey; and brother-in-law, James McFeaters.

A service with full military honors will take place at his interment in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
