Francis Willard "Bill" Ahlman died at home on Dec. 24, 2011, at the age of 93 after a brief illness.
Born in New York City on Oct. 10, 1918, he worked for Walter Winchell at the Daily Mirror covering the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial and as a pianist and guitarist in Alexander Gunderson's band during the 1930s. Following graduation from Pratt Institute, he married the love of his life, Caroline Meyer, on Dec. 24, 1941, in Brooklyn shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. He joined the Army Air Corps and served in England during the V-rocket attacks of World War II.
The family lived in Brooklyn after the war where he worked as a quality chemist for Sunshine Biscuits. They moved to Pearl River, N.Y., in 1949 where he managed pharmaceutical quality for Lederle Laboratories.
Mr. Ahlman pursued lifelong passions for an eclectic mix of painting, music, sailing, literature, cooking and theater. He and his wife moved to San Antonio, Texas, and then to Williamsburg in1994 to be near family. They enjoyed many activities with local seniors, especially the bridge groups.
Survivors include Caroline, his wife of 70 years; daughter, Lynne (Bill) Christensen of Williamsburg and son, Bill, of Newport News; two grandchildren, Scott and Todd Christensen; as well as three great-grandchildren, Erica, Grant and Wyatt.
Private interment with full military honors will be at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heritage Humane Society.
