He was the son of Susan (Burrall) and Alexander Chegwin of Illogan, Cornwall, England. His father was a miner and Edward had at least 11 siblings. He immigrated to Christchurch before 1885, as did his widowed mother, and brothers William and John H., and sister Eliza Jane Chegwin. He was a carpenter, builder, and later, a clerk. He married Grace Moyle in 1879 in New Zealand. He was 68 years old at the time of his death.

Also Grace his beloved wife. Died 21st August 1926, aged 72 years.
