Richard "Dick" John Christel, Sr., age 78, of Reedsville, passed away on June 13, 2013 at Brilliion West Haven.

Dick was born on April 26, 1935 in the town of Liberty, son of the late William and Loretta (Schnettler) Christel. He was a graduate of Kiel High School, class of 1953. Dick served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On August 22, 1959, he married Darlene Braun at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Maple Grove. Dick and Darlene operated the home farm on Christel Road in St. Nazianz until purchasing their own dairy farm in Reedsville. There they raised their eight children and worked until his retirement. Dick also worked at the Brillion Iron Works while farming, was a salesman for Renk Seed, and drove school bus for Reedsville Busses. He was a member of the St. Nazianz Fire Department, the Reedsville Jaycees, the Farm Credit Board, the Knights of Columbus, and the Reedsville AmVets Post 1032. Dick loved to go to "the woods," ride his golf cart, bowl, play softball, and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darlene; their children and spouses: Ric (special friend Sandy Horswill) Christel, Jr., Jane (Lowell) Behnke, Tim (Ileana) Christel, Patty (Al) Schreiber, Susie (Al) Smet, Sandy Braun-Christel, and Jeff (Jenny) Christel; daughter-in-law: Peggy (Ken) Dvorachek; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 5 godchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Lorraine Bechle, Joann (Melvin) Koeppen-Mueller, and Carol Leschke; one brother and three sisters-in-law: Ron (Janet) Christel, Mary Ellen (Edward) Broeckert, and Betsy (Eugene) Reindl; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law: John and Gladys (O'Neil) Braun, one son: Bill, one brother: Father David Christel, one sister and three brothers-in-law: LaVerne (Ted) Hunter, "Specs" Bechle, and Glenn Koeppen, and one sister-in-law: Roseanne (Roman) Heizen.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Timothy Brandt. Entombment will be at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth. Military Rites will be accorded by the Reedsville AmVets Post 1032.

Friends may call at the church on Sunday, June 16, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will conclude the visitation. The visitation will continue on Monday at church from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Online condolences may be made at www.wieting-funeralhome.com
