Mayo served as an ensign in a Cumberland county minuteman company, a Capt. during the Revolutionary War and was captured at Charleston in 1780. He was a J.P., sheriff, member of the House of Delegates-1786-88 & Lt Col. commandant of the 17th Va Militia Reg. He inherited Boston Hill & married Ann Adams 9/30/1789. In 1809 she sold Boston Hill, now 595.5 acres to a nephew, Benjamiin Carrington.
