David was born April 1, 1949 in Buncombe County where he had lived all of his life. Prior to his illness, he was a transport truck driver for Ingle's Markets for 31 ½ years. He was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp. David was son of the late Robert F. and Katherine Dermid Buckner and was also preceded in death by his infant sister, Brenda Buckner.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Brenda Penland Buckner; daughter, Shelley Shell of Chattanooga, TN; sons, Nathan Buckner and wife Amanda of Concord and Justin Buckner of Asheville; step-son, Lance Fesperman and wife Carrie of Anderson, SC; sisters, Anna Lee Noles and husband Jim of Phoenix, AZ, Frances Malala and husband Moe of American Samoa and Sara Lehrer and husband Tim of Spartanburg, SC; brother, Robert F. Buckner, Jr. of Asheville and 9 grandchildren.
His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 2015 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. Reverends Stan Welch, Tony Hooper and Terry Dixon will officiate. Burial will be in Brank Cemetery with military honors.
Serving as pallbearers will be Nathan Buckner, Justin Buckner, Chandler Anderson, Wesley Lehrer, Jeffrey Lehrer and David Shell.
