Published: The Charleston Gazette, Sunday, September 4, 1988

Three former Dunbar residents, a husband, wife and daughter, were killed on a South Carolina interstate Wednesday when their car was struck from behind by a moving van.

Lyle D. Hale, 69, Ruth Eileen Hale, 70, and their daughter, Mrs. Nellie Mildred Hall, 46, all of Simpsonville, S.C., had stopped their car in the emergency lane of Interstate 95 in Jasper County, S. C., when it was struck from behind by a 16-foot rental moving van, according to South Carolina state police Cpl. Garry Rozier with the Ridgeland, S.C., detachment.

The impact drove the car more than 200 feet off the highway, killing Hale and Mrs. Hall outright. Mrs. Hale died while being transported by helicopter to a Savannah, Ga., hospital, Rozier said.

The driver of the truck, a man from Tallahassee, Fla., suffered minor injuries. He has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide, Rozier said. The Hales were Baptists. Mr. Hale was a retired carpenter for Abbott Construction Co. and was an Army veteran of World War II.
