US Congressman. A native of Canada, Platt enlisted into military service with the outbreak of the Civil War. In September of 1861, he was elected to serve as Captain of Company B, 4th Vermont Infantry. In 1862, he was re-assigned to headquarters of the 6th Army Corps as acting chief quartermaster, serving until he was captured by Confederate forces in may of 1864. Released in October 1864, he mustered out of service a month later at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At the conclusion of the war, Platt moved to Virginia where he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing Virginia's 2nd district from 1869 until 1875.
