U.S. Congressman. He attended Allegheny College, (1849 to 1850), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law in Chicago, Illinois. He also was a member of the Chicago Board of Aldermen, (1855 to 1856, 1859 to1860). At the advent of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army and served with the Western Engineers Regiment for eight months. He left the military when elected a member of the Illinois State Senate and served (1862 to 1870). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the northern district of Illinois, serving (1875 to 1877). Relocating to Colorado, he settled in Leadville, in 1877 and was later appointed by Governor Pitkin as judge of the fifth judicial district of Colorado, serving (1881 to 1882). Declining to be re-posted for that office, he moved to Denver, Colorado and resumed the practice of law until his death. His great-great grandfather was U.S. Congressman Mike Ward.
