Joseph G [Gurney] Powell was the 8th child and 4th son of Elijah Powell and Nancy Wright [White] Powell.

Joseph enlisted in the military in 1 March 1862 and was promoted to Full Corporal on 01 Jan 1863. He was again promoted to Full Sergeant on 01 Oct 1863 and the to full Sergeant in Company H, 4th North Carolina Infantry He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Spotsylvania County, Virginia on May 14, 1864. He died the same day.

According to the obituary years later for Elijah Powell "Two of his sons [Joseph & Reuben] fell in the late war [Civil War] and he had them brought home and buried in the family graveyard."

Buried in Powell Family Cemetery located off 332 Hamlet Rd, Eagle Mills Township, Iredell County. The Cemetery is now on private property. GPS NC Coordinates- 35d 58m 32.3s N

Cemetery information was obtain from a book written by Mildred J. Miller and Pat M. Crooks, Time Is, Time Was: Gravestone Art, Burial Customs and History: Iredell County, North Carolina (1990)." and indicate they did the original survey of this cemetery. Cemetery was termed about 2000 in Iredell County Cemetery Books as being 'Lost-Abandoned'. Thanks to Larry Campbell for cemetery for re-discovering in June 2014!
