John H Montgomery was born near Brush Creek, Ohio in November 1854. His parents were Rebecca Ann Wright 1830-1912) and Andrew H Montgomery (1827-1904), a Civil War Veteran who served in the 23rd Regiment Indiana Infantry.

John married Martha Hayes in 1876. They lived in Wapello County, Iowa and St Louis County, Missouri before settling in Omaha in the early 1900s.

John and Martha has three daughters: Lena, Elsie and Edith.
