Son of August Gears and Johanna Middlestead. He was a farmer in Aldine, Harris County, Texas.

He and Miss Evelyn "Eva" Slack were married November 28, 1907 by Rev. William H. Drummet in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

His cause of death was a lightning strike. He had been hauling wood and the two mules pulling his wagon were also killed by the lightning strike. He had stopped to talk with his brother-in-law, W. C. Lyons, who was knocked down by the lightning strike, but was not injured. Mr. Lyons reported that there had been no warning flashes and only a light rain was falling when the lightning struck Mr. Gears and his mules, killing them instantly. The body of Mr. Gears was taken to Houston by a Settegast-Kopf ambulance.

Funeral services were held at the home on Friday, September 2, 1921. Pallbearers were W. E. Strack, August and Otto Slack, Charles Paine, W. C. Lyons and W. G. Sharman.

Survivors: His widow; two daughters, Misses Minnie and Jennie Gears; a brother, T. H. Gears and five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Starr, Mrs. Edith Lyons, Mrs. W. F. Huebotter and Mrs. W. G. Sharman, all of Houston, and Mrs. W. H. Hatfield of Pearland.
