Olaus was the s/o Andreas Pedersen Hesthaugen and Martha Olsdatter Lund Eggeplass. He grew up on the Egge Farm near Steinkjer. He married Oline Wibe December 30, 1866. They had 9 children, 4 of whom died young. Olas took the name Egge when he moved down the fjord to Trondhiem from the farm his parents worked on near Steinjer. He had 2 brothers Peter and Jacob, and two sisters, Maren and Karen.
