According to a family tree on Ancestry.come, Ellen was one of the fourteen children born to Jeremiah Washburn and Nancy McDaniel, who married circa 1814. I found the family on the 1850 Census, living in Liberty, Fulton, Indiana, where Jeremiah was farming for a living. Only five of the children appeared with their parents on that census. Ellen was not one of the five and I couldn't find her living elsewhere. (Note: There is a great photograph of Ellen on Ancestry.com)

On 18 Jan 1853, Ellen married William H. Hogarth in Vigo, Indiana. They had five children together--Edward S. (1854-1933), Rachael A. (b.1859), William Henry (1860-1896), Samuel R. (b.1863), and Sadie Ellen (1872-1904). I found the family on the 1860 Census, living in Wabash, Wasbash Co., Indiana, where William was earning a living as a day laborer.

During the Civil War, William served with the Union Army. He was in Co. K Ind. 5th Cav. Reg. He enlisted on 10 Aug 1862, and mustered out three months later on 10 Nov 1862 as a corporal.

By the 1870 Census, the family had moved to Tippecanoe, Marshall Co., Indiana (today the Argos area), where William continued to work as a day laborer.

When the 1880 enumeration rolled around, the family had again relocated, this time to Elk Station, Johnson, Nebraska, where William Sr. was working as a section boss. William Jr. had found work as a painter and wallpaper hanger.

Ellen died on Christmas Day in 1888 at age 56.
