A lifelong resident of this town, he was a state representative for Marblehead and Swampscott in 1961 and 1962. He had been employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1965 until his retirement in 1974.
Mr. Putnam was a statehouse lobbyist for Sylvania in 1963 and 1964.
He has been a member of the Marblehead Board of Selectmen and a past member of the town's Board of Assessors and Park Commission.
Mr. Putnam was also a former member of the Marblehead Group Insurance Commission.
He was a Navy veteran of World War 2.
A graduate of Marblehead High School, he attended Boston University.
Active in local sports, he was one of the founders of the Marblehead Little League.
He was a member of St. Michael's Church.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. James (Elizabeth Ann) Caswell of Swampscott; a sister, Mrs. George (Louise) Girard of Marblehead; five grandchildren, David, Scott, Rebecca, Allison Bucklin and Kendra Caswell, and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home.
