GEORGE C. ANDERSON is no more.
At an early hour yesterday morning this news spread through the city—sad announcement of the death of one who has been so greatly identified with Keokuk, and so intimately connected with her financial interests. For a long time Mr. Anderson has been confined to his bed. His health has been poor for the past year, and in the summer, in company with his family, he left his business and its cares and journeyed Eastward, with the hope that his health would be benefitted by the change, he came back scarcely any better than before he started. The insidious workings of disease still continued, until finally he became a bed-fast invalid, and after lingering for weeks on the brink of the grave, his soul took its flight to the untried realities of another world.
In 1849 Mr. Anderson commenced the banking business here, and his honesty, probity and substantial worth as a man were soon recognized, and how well he maintained the good opinion of our people is shown by the fact of his being in the same business up to the hour of his decease As a shrewd businessman safe financier, George C. Anderson had but few equals in the West certainly no superiors. He was a man who attended strictly to his own business and never made it a point to go outside of that business for any consideration. Year in and year out he was to be found at his counter, always the same. He was a plain man, whom wealth did not "puff up," but who was as kind to the poor, humble citizen as to those who had their thousands in his vaults. Our people recognized in Mr. Anderson the highest qualifications of a good citizen and a safe and reliable man of business. The sad intelligence of his death will be startling to those abroad who are at all acquainted with Keokuk and her prominent citizens. For several days previous to his death he was unconscious, and his closing hours indicated that reason had left its throne. No words of ours can possibly express the loss which our community has sustained by his death, nor would the feelings of sorrow which now enshroud his household and his large circle of friends be made any the lighter were we to drop from our pan any words of consolation for the great, the irreparable loss which the entire community has suffered in this disposition of Providence.
