SANFORD'S OLDEST MERCHANT PASSES
William T Buchanan 78 years old will be Buried Today

Sanford Sep 9 William Thomas Buchanan Sanford's oldest merchant and one of its oldest citizens died late this afternoon at his home following an illness of more than one year. Mr Buchanan was 78 years of age was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph B Buchanan. He was born in Moore County now Lee County and in 1872 when Sanford was only a crossroads village opened a store here which he has conducted all these years. By close attention to business together with good judgment he amassed quite an estate and was one of Sanford's wealthiest citizens.
He married Mrs Belie Dye in 1875. She died in 1896 and in 1900 he married Miss Lucy Etta Watson who survives him. Surviving also are two daughters Mrs E P Whicker and Miss Lucy Buchanan one son E T Buchanan one sister Mrs Badie Whicker Jonesboro three brothers D B< J B< and James Buchanan all of Jonesboro and eleven grand children.
The funeral service will be held at 4 o clock Wednesday afternoon at Steel Street Methodist Church of which he had long been a member. Interment will be in Shallow Well Church Cemetery near Jonesboro.
