David Stuart Gary, 22, of 1601 Piper Place [Greensboro, NC], died Sunday, [June 24, 1973] in a New Orleans fire that destroyed a bar called "The Upstairs." The block was a block off Canal Street across from the Marriott Hotel.

He was one of 28 [actually 32] killed in the fire. Gary was a piano player with a group, the Tin-Ragtimers Ltd, which had played in the lounge and the ballroom of the Marriott for nine months.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alton Fitzgerald officiating.

Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte.

Gary was a native of Charlotte and a 1968 graduate of Grimsley High School {Greensboro]. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Charlotte.

He was a member of local 322 of the American Federation of Musicians and of the New Orleans Jazz Society and the American Federation of Composers and Arrangers.

He was a graduate of the Electronic Computer Programming Institute in Greensboro.

Survivors are parents, Mr and Mrs Elwyn Ray Gary, Jr. of the home; brothers Douglas Ray Gary of Greensboro and Stuart Ray Gary of the home; grandfather, Elwyn Ray Gary, Sr., of Charlotte.
