MISS JULIA ORTON CLAIMED BY DEATH

Miss Julia Rebecca Orton, one of Lincoln's highly respected citizens and a pioneer resident of Logan county, was claimed by death at 1:15 o'clock Monday morning, November 8. Death occurred at her home at 317 Peking street, where she had been ill for the past five months, suffering from nervous exhaustion.
Miss Orton was a daughter of the late Dr. Lyman Osgood Orton and Julia Cleveland Orton, many years ago honored citizen of Logan county. She was born in Madison, New York, February 8, 1850, and died at the age of 76 years and 9 months.
At the age of 6 years the subject of this sketch came to Washington, Ill., with her parents in 1856 later moving to Broadwell.
For a number of years the Orton family resided on a farm near Broadwell, where Dr. Orton practiced medicine to a limited extent among his acquaintances, but finally withdrew entirely from his profession in 1865. He was an extremely well read physician and able practitioner. Twenty years before his death the family moved to Lincoln.
Miss Orton attended school at St. Mary's institute, Milwaukee where she graduated in 1866. She also attended Oswego Normal college, Oswego, N. Y., and later taught at Cleveland, Ohio, and in the mountain mission schools of North Carolina and Tennessee.
Miss Orton was a former teacher in this community. She was always interested in the present day happenings and read considerably, having accumulated one of the largest and best selected libraries of any private family in the county. For years she was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church in this city. Miss Orton was an extensive traveler, having spent considerable time visiting the foreign lands as well as points of interest in this country.
For four years Miss Orton lived abroad, residing in Germany and England.
The late Franklin Cleveland Orton, formerly a prominent resident of this city was a brother of Miss Julia Orton. Another brother Samuel C. Orton, at one time a resident of Kansas City, Mo., preceded her in death.
The funeral of Miss Orton is to be held from the home on Pekin street, at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev, T.H. Tull of Clinton, former pastor of the Methodist church in this city, in charge of services. Burial will be made in Union cemetery.
The funeral is to be a private one and members of the family request that no flowers be sent.

Same Page another column:
Mrs. M.D. Gates, of Delray, Fla., a niece, had been here with Miss Orton during her last illness. Surviving also are the following nephews: Julias and Franklin C. Orton, Lincoln; Lyman Orton, San Francisco, Louis Orton, Manford?, Fla., and Major William Orton, U.S. army. (Some parts difficult to read)
