David was the oldest of four children born to David Laurence and Doris Hawthorne Prickett. He had one brother, Theodore Robert, and two sisters. He was born in Kansas but as a young boy his family relocated to Wyoming.

At the age of 20 he enlisted in the Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Belleau Wood during World War II. He was discharged from service on February 26, 1946. He was killed a week later in a car accident in Crawford, Nebraska at the age of 23.
