Several members of a South Carolina family with the surname of Free settled in Cocke County in the early 1800s. They built homes south of Newport near the base of English Mountain in the general area of present-day Epley Road.

John Free's children who raised families in Cocke County were James, George, Elizabeth "Betsy" and Isaac.

Allen F. Free, one of John's sons, either remained in or returned to South Carolina.

Little is known about the life of John Free. There is no available record of his death, but Find A Grave contributor Vickiafw58, who identifies him as her 4th great grandfather, added census data to this memorial [right, above] indicating that John and Mary were still living near Newport in 1860. There are no records of his burial or markers for his grave, but there is no doubt that he was buried on his farm in a plot that became known as the John Free Graveyard and later Free Cemetery. After several Clevengers, offspring of Alexander Clevenger and wife Betsy Free, daughter of John, were buried there, it became known as the Free-Clevenger Cemetery.
_______________
Find A Grave contributor Bonnie Brooks (47440812) reports that the Mary listed in census was not John’s wife, “but a 27 year old marked as insane. She maybe a grandchild, but this was not his wife, she was probably already deceased at this point.”
