Gary Dale Thompson, age 73, passed away April 17, 2010 at his daughter's home in Lehi, UT from complications of diabetes. He was born May 18, 1936 in Heber City, UT, a son of William Ernest and Belva Moon Thompson. He married Nettie Mae Sorensen May 18, 1963 in Elko, NV. Gary served his county proudly in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. He worked in the engine rooms on steam turbines (MM2). He served aboard VSS Blue DD744, his brother Karl served with him for a year aboard the Blue. He began working at the Tooele Army Depot in 1963 as and Inspector and Heavy Duty Machinist until his retirement in 1988. Gary also worked for the US Forest Service in the summer of 1962 at Soapstone. He loved woodworking, he crafted bird houses, picnic tables and made each of his grandchildren a beautiful wooden chair. He loved hunting, camping and fishing until his health declined. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved watching the Jazz, in fact he was watching a game when he passed away. Survivors include his three children: Gary (Jessica) Thompson, of American Fork, UT, Scott, also of American Fork, Tera (Doug) Benson of Lehi, UT, and his two adopted children, Shannon Del Thompson of Orem and Keely Lynn Prows of Pleasant Grove, UT. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three sisters: Maxine Snyder of Daniels, UT, Norma Sabey of Wallsburg, UT, Donna (Dale) Jones of Heber City, UT, and his brother Karl (Elsie) Thompson of Roy, UT. He was preceded in death by his wife Nettie, 2 daughters; Jackie Lynn Thompson and Barbara Ann Thompson Gourdin as well as 2 brothers Glendon and Merlin Thompson. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cascade Chapel at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem. A viewing will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and also Friday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery
