Born to Bertha Hallauer, Find A Grave Memorial #76393120 and Harry Lester Jones, Find A Grave Memorial #48158621.

He had one sister, Mary Jones-Montalbo, Find A Grave Memorial #76407320 who died 2002 in Lassen County, California.

Adopted by Bertha's Sister Emma Lillian Hallauer-McDonald and Albert McDonald in 1933 because his birth father Harry Jones could not afford to take care of him and his new wife and two additional children during the great depression of the 1930s.

My dad was a quiet, introverted man who preferred to spend his life by himself. Because of this he didn't have any friends and rarely communicated with his family. He always dressed in a coat and tie which was from a bygone era when nobody went out without the proper clothes. Many of the people he interacted with said that he was pleasant and respectful.

Even though he was not an affectionate man and had problems interacting, we never went hungry, we always had a roof over our heads, and had clothes to wear.

My dad served and retired after 20 years in the Army Air Force then the US Air Force. He was assigned to multiple training squadrons and never saw combat in WWII or Korea.

When he was younger his hobbies included amateur radio, photography, and sailing. He volunteered in the Coast Guard Auxiliary teaching celestial navigation which was self taught.

He met his wife Claudia Dion in France at a USO while on leave. 2 weeks later they married. While the marriage lasted 20 years it was not a perfect match and they divorced. They had three sons:

Children
Joel McDonald
-Grand Children
JessicaMarie Briona McDonald
Devin Anlon McDonald

Claude McDonald
-No Children

Robin McDonald
-Grand Children
Jason McDonald

Melvin McDonald died quietly of congestive heart failure complicated by kidney damage.

He is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery sharing the same grave with his adoptive mother Emma. The cemetery is full and not accepting new burials but special circumstances are accepted where a single grave is shared.
