Leukemia Victim, Larry Abernathy, Dies At Piedmont --
Larry Thomas Abernathy, 12, of 510 Southern Avenue, Piedmont, died Sunday night, November 20, 1960, at Piedmont Hospital after a long illness. The child was the object of a fund drive by friends and neighbors joined by Anniston Helping Hand Club. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Dailey Street Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Akins officiating. Burial was in Macedonia #2 Cemetery in Crossville. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Odis Abernathy (Audrey); one brother, Harold Abernathy; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Penland of Crossville. Pallbearers were cousins. Honorary pallbearers were Little League Club members and members of the seventh grade at Piedmont High School. Larry was a resident of Piedmont for the past three years. He was a seventh grade honor student. In 1960 he won a trophy in Little League ball club for the most home runs and won a trophy for the most valuable player in the local American League. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lewis Jefferson Abernathy and Cora Peek Abernathy.
