S/o Burwell Hylton and May Ann "Polly" Slusher. He m. Hannah Elizabeth "Betsy" Wade. 7 December 1848. Enlisted 6 April 1864 in the C.S.A. 24th Virginia Infantry, Co. A, at Richmond, Va. He was captured at Farmville 4 April 1865 and was released from Pt. Lookout, Md. 3 June 1865. He returned to Floyd Co. to run a store and be a Federal Postmaster.
